Private Grudges in Plain Sight

Private Grudges in Plain Sight
Everyday antagonisms
Castle Rock residents carry long-standing resentments over neighbors, money, religion, work, and personal embarrassment. Most disputes remain contained by habit and the expectation that people will eventually get over them.
Vulnerable connections
Gaunt’s small-town insight lets him identify which people can be provoked through which objects or relationships. The town’s close ties make his intended pairings unusually effective.
The First Provocations

The First Provocations
Private terms
Gaunt sells objects tied to a customer’s deepest wants and adds a secret prank as part of the payment. The customer believes the act is limited and harmless.
Hidden cross-wiring
His tasks link people with existing grievances: Brian is directed toward Wilma, and other buyers are assigned targets across town. The apparent bargains are also instructions for conflict.
The First Deaths

The First Deaths
An escalation disguised as revenge
Brian’s mud prank is attributed to Nettle; Hugh’s attack on Raider is attributed to Wilma. Each target interprets a staged provocation through old fears and resentment.
Mutual violence
Nettle and Wilma meet with weapons and kill one another. Gaunt’s manipulation works because each woman believes she is responding to a genuine personal attack.
Grievances Multiply

Grievances Multiply
Deceptions spread
Gaunt’s planted letters, damaged possessions, and staged insults drive additional townspeople toward anger. Ordinary misunderstandings become evidence of conspiracy or betrayal.
Weapons replace pranks
As Gaunt begins supplying guns and explosives, the chain ceases to be a series of private tricks. Customers move toward violence with little awareness of how their actions connect.
An Unfinished Chain

An Unfinished Chain
The town erupts
Gunfire, bombings, and the religious brawl reveal the scale of Gaunt’s cross-wiring. The violence affects people who never knowingly agreed to any bargain.
The chain is interrupted
Alan and Polly confront Gaunt, but they cannot erase the deaths and injuries already caused. Breaking the supernatural scheme halts its continuation without removing individual responsibility.
